Weekend Visitors

From A:
Happy Fall! The pumpkins have started making their seasonal appearances in stores. Here I am with one of the gigantic pumpkins we saw in our Sam's Club (we estimate a weight of about 25 pounds):
This weekend, J's parents came to visit us. We had a nice weekend, complete with a visit to Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. Here is a picture of the bridge over the koi pond, along with some very large lilypads:
On our way to have a picnic overlooking Lake Kanapaha, we saw some beautiful little lilypads and flowers:
We also saw a Jabba the Hut caterpillar munching on leaves:

Overall, a great day with real, live nature and some special guests!

Football, Week 3

From J:

This week, we play Tennessee. Much has been made of Lane Kiffin's boneheaded comments in the media, but I chalk it up to 1) him being an idiot and 2) him trying to drum up some excitement for UT football. That was really his only option, since his record as a head coach (then) was 5-15 and it's tough to get people excited based on that statistic. He's done an excellent managing expectations headed into the game, though, as he can't do anything to lose at this point. UF is supposed to scrub the floor with UT so badly that anything short of a blowout will be a victory, and a blowout will just be meeting expectations. So, without further ado:

45-10 Gators. I also predict a Joe Haden interception AND a Will Hill interception.

More Birthday Pictures!

From A:

I finally have the time to post some more pictures from my birthday last weekend. I've gotten some questions about what the famous cake looked like once it was cut, so here it is:

Yep, it's chocolate! And yummy, too.

Many thanks to everyone who remembered my birthday with gifts, cards, phone calls, and emails. I felt so special! Here are the cards I received (and the roses J got for me):

I was also surprised with an amazing wedding scrapbook Colleen began making for my birthday. She already put together the cutest pages for the bridal shower, bachelorette night, morning of the wedding, and she even included samples of our save the date, invitations, and wedding program. Now, I'll get to finish it with our official photos from the photographer. One picture can't even begin to show it off, but here's a little taste for our readers:

I'm looking forward to adding the photos from the photographer and then getting to share it with friends and family. Thanks, Colleen!

And finally, here is a photo of Chef J making a special birthday blueberry pancake breakfast for me (we even had blueberry maple syrup on top!):

Birthday cake!

From J:

Some of you have heard about this. Heck, all of you have heard about this and have probably seen a photo of it by now. For A's birthday this year, I made her a cake. And NOT JUST ANY CAKE. This cake is a masterpiece of fondant and icing, colored to perfection as a perfect replica of a famous United States landmark! I give you...the Pensacola Beach sign from Gulf Breeze, A's hometown.

What, you were expecting the Statue of Liberty, or something? Actually, I should have done the Washington Monument. That would have been pretty easy. Anyway, A has a replica of this on her desk at work that lights up, so I figured that she would also like a replica made out of cake that she could eat.

How does one go about making something like this out of cake? First, bake some cakes (I made chocolate). This is easy. Follow the directions on the box. I specifically followed the "low fat" directions which calls for applesauce instead of oil and less water. Tastes fine.

Now, on to the fancy stuff.

I scaled and printed out the above picture to use as a template. Then, I made some fondant to give the cake clean lines and a paintable surface. I also cut letters out of the fondant. To make fondant, mix: 1) 8oz of marshmallows and 2) 2 Tbsp of water. Nuke it in the microwave until the marshmallows fluff up, then stir them with a spoon sprayed with nonstick spray. Oh, and spray the bowl before you add in the marshmallows. After stirring, you can add some color.

Now, add in confectioner's sugar until it isn't sticky any longer. This takes a very large amount of confectioner's sugar. Oh, and it's sticky.

Keep your work surface well covered in sugar to prevent sticking. After adding in enough sugar, it turns in to a dough-like substance that can be rolled. I made three batches of fondant: yellow, white, and red (came out pink - coloring is a bit of an art). This fondant has the advantage of being very, very tasty. I mean, it's marshmallows and sugar. Of course it's going to taste good.

Now, I used the aforementioned template to cut out the sign. Each piece was covered in a thin layer of chocolate icing to make the fondant stick.

The letters were the toughest part. I used the same technique one uses when carving a pumpkin, using a pushpin to trace the outline of what you're cutting with dots. It worked pretty well.

I then cut out the letters using a paring knife. This was not easy.

A single piece of fondant , yo.

I wet the base fondant very slightly so that it would become sticky again to attach the writing. The sign, post-fondanting:

Now, I worked on the fish. Same principle, use the photo as a template and ice, then fondant. The iced version:

After fondanting, I used gel coloring and a fine paint brush to do all of the colors. The end result!

A loved it. In fact, I've gotten more praise for doing this cake than I have for anything else in recent memory. Does this tell me something about my path in life? I think that fancy cakes are going to become a tradition around here, because this was actually pretty fun to do. Total cost: $10. Time invested, including setup and cleanup: 6 hours.

Gator Football, week 2

From J:

A much more detailed post on my weekend exploits coming up later today. But a very fast one for now with my predictions for UF v. Troy.

Drumroll....

Gators by 35. Troy is a decent team. They've played us for the past 3 years, they almost beat LSU last year in Tiger Stadium, and they won the Sun Belt last year. We'll win convincingly.

For my off-the-wall prediction for the game, Moody outrushes Demps.

UPDATE: Gators won by 50. Moody fumbled the first time he touched the ball and didn't see it again the entire game, so I failed on both counts this week. Sigh.

Tebow Mania

From A:

J and I had a great time at the first Gator game of the season. Although it was a complete blowout (we paid Charleston Southern $450K to let us beat them up on the field), it was a great game to have first row seats. Here are some of the perks we experienced in Row 1:

1. Entertainment from Albert and Alberta. Since Mr. 2-Bits retired (again) last season, Albert dressed like him at the beginning of the game and did the familiar 2-Bits chant with everyone. Didn't he look cute in his plaid pants?

2. Appearances by the fake Erin Andrews on the sideline. Luckily, it wasn't the real Erin, because I think J would have jumped out of the stands in hopes of meeting her.

3. The Gator Band version of "Mr. Roboto" at halftime, complete with some robot dancing. This was the one moment when I wished that I wasn't so close to the field.

4. Having a great view of the game when the action was between the 5 and 25 yard lines.

5. Giving Tim Tebow a high-five after the game!!! He is so fast that J's camera is not even able to focus on him.

6. A good photo opportunity.

College Football, Week 1

From J:

Where will you be at 7:00pm? A and I will be...
Section 32, row 1. Here's a blurry picture of our tickets!

I've been on row 1 for several games, and this is a perfect game for it. The best part about row 1 is that you can really see and feel the action on the 10 yards nearest you. Outside of those 10 yards, you have no idea what's going on. Since we're playing Charleston Southern, I don't care much about what's happening in the game since it's a foregone conclusion. Also, I'll be able to offer words of encouragement for the visiting team. Normally, taunting would be in order, but I'm not that mean of a guy.

Official prediction for today's game: UF by 60. Or until we get bored.
Wildcard! prediction: John Brantley passes for more yards than Tebow.

UPDATE:

UF won by 59, so I consider my prediction uncannily accurate, as we missed an extra point. Sadly, though, Brantley mostly handed the ball off and he did not outpass Tebow.
